Before Accepting a Rush Order, Check the Real Trade-Off

A rush request is a new scheduling decision, not merely a higher price. Before agreeing, identify which stage must move: material purchase, tooling, production queue, inspection or transport. Some stages can be accelerated with cost or priority; others depend on approvals or physical process time and cannot be wished away.

Check who absorbs the change

Ask planning which existing order would move if the rush job takes a shared machine. Ask quality whether inspection resources and acceptance criteria remain intact. Ask purchasing for confirmed expedited material options, not only a hopeful vendor promise. If freight is the only speed lever, separate that charge from the production quote.

Offer a rush schedule only after these owners review it. State the required buyer response and the date until which the reserved capacity is held. If no reliable path exists, give the earliest supported date rather than a heroic target with no plan.

Once accepted, watch the specific critical path daily. A rush quote should create tighter monitoring, not a weaker quality check. Record what was actually delivered so the next urgency request can be judged from evidence rather than anecdote.

Worked example (illustrative)

A buyer requests delivery earlier than the current plan. Planning identifies a possible weekend slot, quality confirms inspection coverage, and purchasing checks whether material can arrive in time. The supplier quotes an expedited option only after those owners agree. Existing orders displaced by the slot are part of the decision, not invisible collateral.
