Read a Test Report Before Putting It in a Supplier Pack

A test report is useful only if its scope matches the offered product. Before attaching one, compare the report's model name, revision, sample description and test conditions with the current quotation. A report for a similar family member may suggest what to test next, but it does not automatically cover a new configuration.

Make the boundary legible

Write a cover note with the report identifier, issuing laboratory or internal test owner, test date, tested configuration and result. Separate “passed the listed test under the stated conditions” from a broader claim that the product is approved for every market or use. If the report is incomplete, mark the missing pages and request the complete copy rather than using a cropped image.

Keep the original file and any later amendment together. If a design or material change occurred after testing, ask engineering whether the result still applies and document the answer. Do not let the date alone decide validity; the technical relationship matters.

The buyer-facing test is straightforward: can a reader identify the exact model and conditions from the report without a sales explanation? If not, send a scope note or commission the needed test before claiming compliance.

Worked example (illustrative)

A report covers a black enclosure with one connector, while the quote offers a revised enclosure with two. The supplier attaches the report only with a scope note identifying the tested model and difference. Engineering decides whether another test is needed before anyone describes the revised unit as having passed the original report's conditions.
